for SATB (with divisions) and piano This dazzling work presents an
exploration of light in its many forms and uses, from starlight and
sunlight to electricity, photosynthesis, or guiding ships to
safety. Both piano and voices are used pictorially, conjuring the
beautifully descriptive images from Charles Bennett's text in a
musical setting that contrasts moments of high energy and
tranquility. Lightwaves is sure to capture the imagination and
provide an illuminating take on this fascinating subject.
This Day unites five very different texts, both sacred and secular,
in an exploration of man's relationship with the world and with
God. Opening with an optimistic F sharp major setting of Emily
Dickinson's 'Bring me the sunset in a cup', the work progresses
through the stages of a day (or, indeed, a life): 'Awake, my soul!'
(Thomas Ken), 'This Day' (Jewish text, adapted Chilcott), 'The
Bright Field' (R.S. Thomas), and 'O Lord, support us' (John Henry
Newman). This is powerfully evocative music embracing a range of
moods and styles, with moments of joyful optimism, spiritual
enlightenment, and poignancy.
for SSA and piano Our Voice sets the poem 'Murmuration' by
contemporary poet Eleanor Stewart-Pointing, which explores the
relationship between the human voice and the sounds and music of
the natural world. The piano writing gives the piece an energetic,
jazzy feel, while the voice parts are sustained and intuitive.
for SATB and soloists (M-S, T, & B), with organ and flute or
small ensemble With this majestic work Chilcott takes on a landmark
of the choral repertory, the Christmas Oratorio. Words from St Luke
and St Matthew are intertwined with 16th-19th-century poetry to
create a compelling retelling of the Christmas story. Five hymn
texts are set to new, original melodies that take their place among
the season's tradition of great hymnody and enable the audience or
congregation to join in with the choir. As in the St John Passion,
much of the narrative is presented by a tenor soloist in the role
of Evangelist, with focal points such as the Magnificat and Nunc
dimittis and Rossetti's 'Love came down at Christmas' taken by
mezzo-soprano and bass soloists. The chorus is integral to the
storytelling, assuming small character roles and taking centre
stage in two unaccompanied movements. A solo flute characterizes
the angels, and the mellow tones of the brass ensemble evoke a
sense of festive tradition.
for SATB, accompanied and unaccompanied To celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the publication of Carols for Choirs 1, OUP presents

resource for choirs from Advent through to Epiphany. Featuring
brand new carols and arrangements of classic tunes, the collection

composition today, both in the UK and world-wide.
for SSA and piano The Sun and Stars Are Mine is a lyrical setting
of words by the metaphysical poet and clergyman Thomas Traherne
(1637-74). With a rippling piano accompaniment, melodious vocal
lines, and warm harmonies, Chilcott's setting captures the wonder
in the text, as Traherne reflects with awe on the transient nature
of life: 'When silent I so many thousand years, . . . how could I
lips or hands or eyes or ears perceive?'
SATB and soloists (soprano, tenor, and two baritones), with organ
or small ensemble Chilcott's mighty setting of words from the
Gospel of St John is a dramatic yet optimistic retelling of the
Passiontide story. As with Bach's great Passion settings, the role
of the Evangelist is taken by the tenor soloist, who provides a
melodious narrative throughout the work, in arioso style. The words
of Jesus and Pilate are performed by solo baritones. Within the
narrative, the SATB chorus becomes a crowd or a group of soldiers,
commenting on the story in short outbursts, although the larger
role of the choir is to perform the four meditations and five hymns
that support the story. For the meditations-two of which include
soprano solos-Chilcott has selected English poems from the 13th to
the early 17th centuries. The five well-known hymn texts are set to
new, original melodies, which are also intended for performance by
an audience or congregation.

for SSA double choir, piano, and flute obbligato This is a lyrical
and compelling upper-voice setting of Joseph Mary Plunkett's 'White
waves on the water'. Chilcott expertly employs the double SSA
forces, resulting in a colourful array of textures and vocal
combinations, from unison to six parts. The voices are accompanied
by a florid flute obbligato and a piano accompaniment.
Set for SSA and piano, this is a piece full of rhythmic invention
and energy which sets a Guaymi dawn song.
for upper voices (SSAA) unaccompanied These two enjoyable and easy
songs use riddle texts from the 17th and 18th centuries that are
both haunting and rich with imagery. Chilcott produces two charming
and characterful miniatures that although simple, manifest a
'swanlike' dignity befitting their subject.
Suitable for upper voices (SSSA) and piano.
